Art Heritage of the Ormož Area
The exhibition is staged in three halls on the second floor of the castle of Ormož, to which the ambience of the former castle chapel, situated in the defence tower, conveys special charm.
The first floor invites a visitor to stroll along the Roman stone statues, to discover castles situated in the wider Ormož area as well as the medieval sacral architecture, Gothic statues and frescoes. A special curiosity housed in the first hall is the Roman baptistery and a copy of a knee-length statue representing a bearded man taken from the southern bell-tower wall of the parish church of the Holy Trinity in Velika Nedelja. According to certain experts the statue would have been made prior to the year 1200.
Around 1630 the triumphal wall of the parish church of St. Jacob in Ormož was decorated with a large-scale expressive painting representing the Last Supper. The turbulent time and the balancing of power are equally created by the last Supper painting in the exhibition hall. The victorious rebirth of Catholicism brought along the overwhelming presence of the Baroque style, especially in the late 17th and the 18th centuries. Practically every church was touched by the Baroque style, which can be seen on exhibited panels showing Baroque churches, altars, pulpits, wooden statues and frescoes.
The third hall houses the exhibition of artistic outline of the 19th century in the area of Ormož.
